Raise Up is a sculpture permanently on view at Equal Justice Initiative’s National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, AL. Artist Thomas adopted Ernest Cole’s 1960s image of gold mine recruits stripped down for a group medical examination and reproduced the workers’ raised arms in three-dimensional bronze. The gesture recalls countless images made in the decades since; reminders of how violence against racialized groups persists.
